~*SECRETS OF ODC*~ This week: POWER RATINGS!

Many of you are already familiar with how we group teams into divisions but for the newer members, here’s how it goes. Every player who plays at least 10 games in a season has a win/loss average for that season. That average is then multiplied against a Division Modifier to produce a Power Rating (PR). Division Modifiers start at 1.0 for Gold 1 and descend incrementally to 0.6 for the lowest division. This Power Rating can now be accurately compared to players in any division since an 80% avg. in Bronze 3 is not the same as an 80% avg. in Gold 1. A Bronze III 80% equals a PR of 48 (80x.6) while a Gold I 80% equals a PR of 80 (80x1.0). Next, your PRs from every season (with at least ten games) are combined and averaged (sum of all PRs divided by # seasons played) to calculate your Lifetime Power Rating (LPR). Now while the LPR is the best stat to gauge a player’s skill level, it doesn’t take into account recent events. Once you’ve been playing a long time, one really good or bad season isn’t going to have much effect on your LPR since you have so many other PRs in there, it’s like peeing in the ocean. But there are valid reasons to consider a previous season’s performance when evaluating which division a player should be placed in next season. Maybe they played against opponents that were much better/worse or they personally improved/worsened due to practice/deterioration or injury. If it was their first season, they’ll likely make a big move up or down in divisions if they won or lost big and have no other PRs to balance their LPR. But when you have more than one season's stats, we take the average of your LPR and your previous season's PR [(LPR+PR)/2]to create a Adjusted Power Rating (APR) which nicely balances how you usually throw (LPR) with how you just threw (PR). The top four APR's on your roster are combined to create your Team Power Rating (TPR). <next week: Team Power Ratings!>

~*SECRETS OF ODC*~ A new weekly feature (if I can keep it going!) giving a glimpse into the inner workings of our club. This week: Player #'s.
They aren't required on your scorecards and they don't really fulfill any function besides possibly being a clue to someone's identity if the scorecard's handwriting is so bad as to be indecipherable. So why do we have them? Besides our Access database requiring a unique identifier for each player record, they're essentially a holdover practice from our formative years in GNODA (pre-2000) when you'd get a physical, wallet-sized paper membership card with your name & number on it and a signature line. If questioned by an opposing team, you were supposed to present it at matches to prove your identity. It sounds crazy but with 2000+ members, there were some sneaky high-talent tricksters who would sometimes try to play incognito on their friends' Bronze teams. For the first year of ODC, we actually printed up membership cards for everyone with the full schedules on the back (we only had three divisions at that time and it was small enough to fit). Player numbers were assigned as people joined but once we hit 1000, I started culling dropouts and one-season members with low Power Ratings to recycle their 2-3 digit numbers. This explains why some new players may have lower numbers than some ODC veterans. Here are some of our most experienced veterans with 49 or more seasons, five of which I'm proud to call my teammates:

WEEK 1 NEWS:
- Welcome to the Fall 2023 season of ODC, the final third of our 24th year of steel-tip action in the Big Easy-In/Double-Out!
This should be an exciting season with many 'prodigal' teams returning, some existing teams re-forming and several new teams signing up, swelling our ranks to 38 teams, our largest assemblage since the pandemic closures.
    A special welcome goes to new-ish teams MCYC TCBY's and OAK ST. MUD BUGS' new members, as well as the completely fresh BASIN BB WHEN team in their very first dart league adventure.
Summer's Silver 2 second place finisher McCool Runnings split into two Holy Ground teams over the break becoming the bar-theme appropriately named CHUCKS & the HALLOWED HURLERS. Chuck Capt. Dennis says he's excited about their promotion to Gold 2.
   I'm very curious to see how Silver 1 shakes out. There are two new mashup teams of former Gold players with newer players and some recent G2 drop-downs that should make things very interesting.
If you compare the Summer division winners against the Fall schedule, you'll notice that all the winning teams moved up and all the losing teams moved down. The only significant roster changes are last season's one-match sensation Jacques McMillen (5-0) moving from the Aces to Henry's Off in Church and Summer's Bronze MVP Ryan McMahon (20-3) moving from the Friendlies to Mick's Festa (why Friendly bar remains in Bronze to defend their Grail).
   Despite having to make an 8-team division with its weird Weeks 8-10 tournament finale, the overall schedule worked out pretty good with an even number of teams meaning no Byes. There appear to be no bar conflicts between the mostly incompatible 8 vs. 6 team schedules. No matches are scheduled on Halloween or the week of Thanksgiving.
